Background
Osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear type of arthritis, may be the world's leading health complaint. Sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease, it is the most common form of arthritis. Under age 45, osteoarthritis is much more common in men. After 45, it is 10 times more common in women.

Primary osteoarthritis is related to loss of repair competence. With aging, the water content of cartilage increases and its protein makeup degenerates when repair factors are lost or inhibited. Some people may also lose the ability to manufacture adequate levels of glucosamine, an amino sugar that normalizes cartilage metabolism and helps keep cartilage from breaking down.
