Ayurveda translated means "Science Of Life" and is considered by many people to be oldest form of medical treatment yet discovered. Its' roots go back to the ancient Indian civilization and Hindu philosophy some 3000 years ago. Because it was a predecessor to other forms of Oriental medicine, it is considered to have been highly influential on the development of these forms of Oriental medicine. Early scriptures written by holy men of the Vedas and others, which recorded health-care and medical procedures of their era, indicated Ayurveda to include massage of bile energy points, which are currently referred to as acupressure points. they also recorded certain forms of surgery. Ayurveda is practiced all over India and is recognized by the World Health Organization.

Ayurveda views the human being is being comprised of five elements, space, air, fire, water, and earth. The five elements correspond to the five cognitive senses: hearing, touch, site, taste, and smell. As in Chinese medicine the vital force or the energy of the body is the main concern. In Ayurveda, the vital force is referred to as prana, which is similar to chi or qi.

As in other forms of Chinese medicine, functioning of the body is controlled by external forces, which are linked to physical substances.
These physical substances in include:
Pitta, the force of heated energy associated with the sun, which controls digestion in biochemical processes
Kapha, the force of water and tides, which is influenced by the moon, which stabilizes and influences the fluid metabolism in the body.
Vata is linked to the wind and is the force, which controls movement and functioning of the nervous system.

Under normal conditions, these three forces are in balance and work together to promote a healthy body. Disease follows if these forces and not in balance.

Control and elimination of disease is accomplished through diet, fasting, various forms of meditation, chanting and proper posture control, sleep and lifestyle improvements.

When disease is deeper and difficult to resolve, a more complex assortment of treatments are brought into play that go beyond Ayurveda.
